The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is proud to honor Kira Clark, BA Foreign Languages; Russian Studies '03, with the 2025 Distinguished Alumni award in Russian and Eurasian studies. Clark is the founder the nonprofit organization, K9s Serving Vets, and a U.S. Army veteran.

Looking Back, Thinking Forward: A GLOA Grad’s Reflection

Meet Anka Whelan, a Global Affairs and Eurasian Studies double major who graduated this spring, in 2025. As an accelerated master's student, she will complete her MS in Conflict Analysis and Resolution with a concentration in the Dynamics of Violence here at George Mason. With her interdisciplinary education and strong understanding of the Russian language and culture, she hopes to bring this expertise into the field of international security, where she can research and analyze the war in Ukraine and its human rights and security implications.

Peter Boettke publishes new book on Estonia's path to freedom

The Road to Freedom: Estonia’s Rise from Soviet Vassal State to One of the Freest Nations on Earth recounts the fall of Estonian freedom when, for five decades, it was trapped in the Soviet Union. Eventually, following a mostly-peaceful revolution, Estonians regained their freedom and reformed their nation quickly to become one of the freest nations on earth.

Michael D. Marino honored with distinguished alumni award

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is proud to honor Michael D. Marino, BA Russian Studies '11, with the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award in Russian and Eurasian Studies. Marino is the director of class giving, Columbia College Fund, at Columbia University. He holds a BA in Russian studies from George Mason University (2011) and a MEd in college student affairs administration from the University of Georgia (2015).
