This course will survey the lived experience of women in Muslim societies from the time of the rise of Islam to the present-day. It will do so by examining the historical processes that impacted the role and status of women in the Islamic world, as well as the ways in which women reacted to, negotiated, and subverted them in their own interest, through readings, documentaries, films, and literature by and about Muslim women.
